🇿🇦💸 South Africa’s tax base shock

South Africa’s tax system is facing an alarming imbalance that economists warn is unsustainable:

▪️Just 1,660,182 individuals—a mere 2.6% of the country’s 64 million people—contribute 76.2% of all personal income tax.

▪️The situation is equally concerning in the corporate sector. Only 1,051 companies—representing 0.1% of the total—pay 72.3% of all company income tax.

▪️Over 30% of the population—approximately 19.2 million people—currently rely on social grants, a figure projected to grow to 19.7 million by 2026/27.

▪️This means that roughly 12% of South Africans who pay income tax are supporting a social safety net for nearly half the population.

ArcelorMittal South Africa to Close Long-Steel Works

ArcelorMittal South Africa will close its business that makes long-steel products, potentially affecting about 3,500 jobs.

Persistent high logistics and energy costs, together with insufficient policy interventions by the government, left the business unsustainable, the company said in a statement Monday.

A decision to shutter the business was previously announced last February, but the company delayed the move after consulting with the government and state-owned freight firm.

South African steel industry “is facing its greatest sustained challenge” since the 2008 financial crisis, the firm said, adding that deteriorating global and local steel markets, high expenses and surging low-cost imports — particularly from China — have damaged the business.

🇿🇦🇨🇳 SA’s EV tax break may lure China to invest in multi-billion-rand industry

Enabling a 150% tax deduction on investment in electric- and hydrogen-powered vehicle production comes as Chinese automakers are taking Africa’s biggest car market by storm.

South Africa is poised for Chinese investment in its $27 billion automotive industry after the president signed a tax break for the production of so-called new-energy vehicles into law.

Three Chinese automakers have already signed non-disclosure agreements with the Automotive Business Council, CEO Mikel Mabasa said, declining to identify them.

While the industry has welcomed the step, it comes after years of warnings that car making, the jewel in South Africa’s manufacturing sector, is at risk because of legislation in its biggest export market — the European Union — aimed at phasing out the use of internal-combustion engines.

The police in Musina, Limpopo, have recovered five rifles, a handgun, and a stolen vehicle shortly after a violent farm attack left a family traumatised.
According to reports, armed attackers invaded the farmhouse early on Wednesday morning, assaulting, tying up, and robbing them.
The victims—a couple and their three children—were severely injured as they were tied up and then tortured.
Among the stolen items were a TV, laptop, microwave, and firearms taken from a safe. The suspects fled in the family’s vehicle.
The victims sought help from neighbours, who alerted the authorities. Police later found the stolen goods in a deserted house in Campbell, which the suspects allegedly planned to rent. The stolen vehicle was also located near a local dumpsite.
No arrests yet.

Broken down or overturned trucks are always swarmed with looters in South Africa. Unless, they carry books.

📝 Joost Strydom, chief executive of Orania, writes on X:

Orania 2025: Oranians must embrace all types of independence

The future is dark, the only way to deal with it is to embrace independence.

There is no way to predict the future. No one knows what the unthinkable political events of the future will be, no one predicted the lockdown, we do not know who the bedfellows of the power structures of the world will be in 2025, and we do not know where unexpected wars (or unforeseen peaces) will arise.

Orania's goal is freedom for Afrikaners. Freedom is not to predict the future, freedom is not even the guarantee of calm waters or prosperous times. It is the knowledge that political decisions can be made and implemented according to your people's own principles. So, what lies ahead for us is dark, but we can build on independence to handle as many negative events as possible according to our own principles, and to be able to take up as many positive opportunities as possible according to our own initiative.

What are some of the independences that Oranians can, and should, focus on?

Despite a pause in load shedding, Oranians did not build solar farms and buy a battery just to be load shedding-free. The initiative promotes energy independence. Our plan makes it possible to make our own decisions about our own energy. May it grow to even greater independence in 2025.

We could not control that the BELA legislation was signed by the President of South Africa, but we can control that we build on educational independence in Orania with two private schools and Bo-Karoo Opleiding as a tertiary training institution. May it also grow to greater independence in 2025.

South Africa is a dangerous country, with several cities among the top 10 most dangerous in the world. We cannot control this, but we can build on security independence by taking responsibility ourselves and working together where we can. Orania Security Services made several arrests around Orania in 2024 and are helping to keep the region safe. May security grow towards even greater independence in 2025.

Orania and Afrikaners cannot control that the South African government sometimes sours international relations, but we can build on diplomatic independence – privatized diplomacy. The Orania Movement engaged with several international parliamentarians in 2024, and made our case to consular and embassy representatives of states represented in South Africa. May our own international relations grow towards greater independence in 2025.

No one can simply reverse the decline of infrastructure and large industries in South Africa, but we can develop infrastructure in Orania and invite entrepreneurs and business people to settle in Orania. Economic independence is critically important for freedom. The Orania Town Council, Orania Development Company and private entrepreneurs helped build infrastructure in 2024. Furthermore, entrepreneurs and institutions such as Orania Savings and Credit (Orania's own bank) and the Orania Chamber of Commerce helped grow the economy. May economic independence develop even further in 2025.

Even more important than all the physical developments, is the independence of our thinking, our faith in God, and our independently conceived plans, may all of this reach new heights in 2025!

I wish you a fantastic 2025. May this be the year where we build on all the independences!

🇩🇪🇿🇦 German tourist stabbed to death for cellphone in Cape Town

Nick Frischke went missing during a hike in Hout Bay in February 2023. His body has never been recovered.

The four men accused of his murder appeared in court today to plead not guilty. They are accused of aggravated robbery, carrying unlicensed weapons and ammunition, and organised crime.

One of the four accused admitted in a police statement that the group robbed Frischke of his phone after threatening him with a knife. Frischke handed his phone over to the group and they told him to walk away. The group called him back for his phone's pin then stabbed him in the back.

The case has been postponed to April.

🇺🇸🇿🇦 What does Trump’s likely Africa team say about policy direction?

There is broad consensus among Washington insiders that Trump will tap Peter Pham as his assistant secretary of state for Africa – the top diplomat tasked with running policy for sub-Saharan Africa. Pham, a seasoned scholar on Africa, served twice during the first Trump administration – as Special Envoy for the Great Lakes and then for the Sahel.

In a November 2024 opinion piece about Trump’s likely Africa policy, Pham said Trump expected reciprocity beyond trade. He said one of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) eligibility criteria was that would-be beneficiaries did ‘not engage in activities that undermine United States national security or foreign policy interests.’

Pham said outgoing president Joe Biden’s administration overlooked that with South Africa, ‘the biggest beneficiary of AGOA and several other American programmes, notwithstanding the country’s closeness to Russia, China and Iran, and its role in leading the “genocide” case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.’

Pham noted that all three national security team members nominated by Trump had raised concerns about ‘Pretoria’s positioning itself in the orbit of Moscow, Beijing, and Tehran as well as its antisemitic antics.’ (The three were Senator Marco Rubio – secretary of state, Michael Waltz – national security adviser, and Elise Stefanik – UN ambassador.)

So South Africa’s new US Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool faces a tough task, keeping South Africa in AGOA and in America’s reasonably good books. He has already taken some preemptive action, telling Daily Maverick that South Africa should ‘put away the megaphone’ on Gaza.

Rasool also believes Pretoria and Trump are basically ‘in alignment’ on Russia’s war against Ukraine because both share a ‘healthy disrespect for NATO’ and oppose the Biden administration’s imperative that NATO should ‘surround Russia.’

Plans to expropriate 3% of private company profit for new R100 billion fund – BusinessTech https://businesstech.co.za/news/government/807490/plans-to-expropriate-3-of-private-company-profit-for-new-r100-billion-fund/
South African businesses already pay 27% corporate tax, among the highest globally (with few benefits). Now, Government proposes an additional 3% of post-tax profit for a transformation fund, equivalent to 2.19% of pre-tax profit.

This effectively raises the corporate tax burden to 29.19%. Excluding all the other taxes we pay : dividends withholding tax, PAYE (salary & bonuses), CGT, fuels tax, estate tax, high VAT and more.

At what point do we realize overburdening businesses and individuals leads to disinvestment, job losses, and reduced growth. The very things we actually need to drive meaningful transformation and employment?

Government must strike a balance between meaningful change and sustainable economic growth.
They must get behind pro-growth initiatives rather.
